Mabon celebrations marks a time when nights start to grow longer - dark starts to defeat the light. Sun God dies with the cutting of the last grain, but with a promise of return in the Spring. Second harvest festival, a time of balance and preparing for the introspective winter. Celebrated with fortune telling, canning and preserving fruits and vegetables, making own mead and baking corn cakes.
Mabon is a time of the Autumn Equinox, the days and nights are once again equal in length and in equilibrium - perfect balance of dark and light. It is a time of changing seasons, greens of summer turning to the colors of autumn. It is also known as a great Second Harvest, harvest of fruits, seeds and vegetables. Fields are empty of corps, which has been stored throughout Lammas for coming winter. It is time for apple picking, jam and wine making.
The Sun God is waning and even though the Goddess is sad of him passing, she is celebrating her heavy pregnancy. Expecting a new Sun God to be born on Yule. Apples, grapes and any rooted vegetable represents the Mother Goddess during this time of the year. Apples carry a lots of symbolism within. Cutting them in half shows a seed pentagram representing all 5 elements, the circle shape represent completion. They represent fertility, immortality, wholeness, healing and regeneration. Mabon marks a time of plenty, giving thanks for all the abundance and blessings of the Year. It is also a time of rest after the harvest season. It symbolized time of reaping and reflecting on what you have sown at the beginning of Imbolc and Ostara, and how it has manifested in your life. Therefore it is a great time to complete project, letting go of what no longer serves you, and a preparation for the time of rest and peace. It is also a great time to plan new project and start to plant the first seeds for the next year's spring.
Your altar should have colors of dark green, red, gold, yellow and brown. Add some apples, berries like cranberries or herbs like rose hips or hawthorn. As Mabon is also a time of hunt, fallen bird feathers, or stag antlers can be also used. It is also a great time to do protection, security, wealth and prosperity spells. You may also choose to make a hunting spell - Spell for strength using a power animal. But it is also time of baking together, volunteering for charity to share your good luck with those less fortunate.
Mabon's prayer for blessing and prosperity:
"Let us give thanks from out hearts
For the blessings of all our good harvest
For the hard-won lessons of life
For the people who bind us together
Making joyful warm hearts out of strife"
